Hydrate with a sweet taste of nature? Review of honeymaxx sports drink 6

As a runner I know how important it is to be and stay hydrated when running, but let’s be honest water can be boring – very boring! Due to water being so boring many of us look to quench our thirst with other supplement drinks while exercising such as Gatorade and Powerade. However, because of all the artificial ingredients in these sports drinks I was looking for an all-natural sports drink, but couldn’t find one. That is, until I stumbled upon honeymaxx.

Why Honey?

Honey is very effective carbohydrate source and is easily consumable than other types of sugars. “A great natural source of carbohydrates which provide strength and energy to our bodies, honey is known for its effectiveness in instantly boosting the performance, endurance and reduce muscle fatigue of athletes. Its natural sugars play an important role in preventing fatigue during exercise. The glucose in honey is absorbed by the body quickly and gives an immediate energy boost, while the fructose is absorbed more slowly providing sustained energy. It is known that honey has also been found to keep levels of blood sugar fairly constant compared to other types of sugar” – http://tinyurl.com/ldccg8a. Knowing these benefits of honey and using honey on a frequent basis during my workouts, I was excited to find a product that would use the benefits of honey in their sports drink

What’s honeymaxx?

honeymaxx is an all-natural honey based sports drink based out of Canada. Founders Tom Freure and Mark Ysseldyk wanted to create a sports drink that was “healthy, all-natural product using honey and all its benefits as the core ingredient.honeymaxx is obtained from the North American Bee, once sourced it is dried to power, this power is then added with electrolytes such as potassium, magnesium, calcium and sodium. The natural and organic flavors, colors and sweeteners are added including organic stevia, beta carotene and turmeric to give the drink an outstanding taste.

When we exercise we lose vital electrolytes, these electrolytes allow us to maintain the right amount of water in out cells. However, when we exercise we lose these electrolytes through perspiration. To keep us from running in the danger of dehydration our bodies need a steady flow of electrolytes. honeymaxx’s powered form allows our bodies to break down these sugars and glucose faster than its original form. Coupled with the other sources of Calcium, Magnesium, and Potassium give a powerful boast of without the crash we get with other like sports drinks. The reason is honey two main components, fructose and glucose; both provide energy to the body. Your body uses the glucose right away, while the fructose acts as slow-release energy. I’ve come to a point in during my runs when I know I’m in need of some energy, but as a regiment I take about 2 ounces every 15mins I run. This way I never get to that point. I find that the mixture is easy on my stomach as well; I would normally get stomachache if I consumed any types of gels or sports drinks during my runs both with honeymaxx my stomach stays settled.

Cure for Sickness?

Not too long ago my family (my wife, myself, and 4 kids) had gotten the flu and we were unable to keep anything down. I suggested to my wife that we drink and keep ourselves hydrated with honeymaxx. Since we all couldn’t keep anything down she was reluctant, however, since we were unable to keep water down, she finally agreed. I mixed up a huge batch and we started to re-hydrate ourselves. We not only were able to keep it down within half day we were all feeling much better. Now did honeymaxx cure our flu, I don’t know, but it definitely hydrated our bodies and gave us the nutrients not to get more sick.

Mix/Taste

When I first mixed the powered I was shocked at how the mix formed. The power formed to somewhat solid, and it took some rigors shaking to break-up the mix. After I thought about it, it wasn’t shocking since honeymaxx is, well, honey! And we all know how sticky honey can be. The secret was to follow the instructions and fill the water bottle up with some water; put in 1 to 2 scoops (depending on the size of the bottle) shake and wait 5mins. After about 5mins fill the water bottle up and shake again. When I did this this was non clunky mix at the bottom.

The mix comes in two flavors, orange and lemon/lime. I prefer the taste of the orange, so I personally haven’t tried the lemon/lime. The orange mix interesting enough tastes like oranges, it’s not an overbearing, more of “hint” that mixes with the honey quite well. What I like most is that I have no “after-taste”, and unlike other sports drinks honeymaxx quenches my thirst.

Likes

  • Convenient pouch, easy travel
  • Taste (orange)
  • All-natural ingredient
  • Easy on the stomach
  • Energy the mix provides

Dislikes

  • Scooper – The scooper is to large and I found to add to most common sports bottles there is some spillage
  • Limited flavors, yes I’m an orange guy, but I’d like to see other flavors than lemon/lime
  • Takes quite a bit of shaking to mix the product

Conclusion

  • Overall I like honeymaxx and it has been a regular staple in my running/workout regiment. If you’re looking for a great tasting, energy boasting sports drink I’d recommend going with honeymaxx!

I’m curious as to how sweet it is… I’m not a fan of Stevia. Natural yes, but processed. And is much rather have the option of sweetening things myself. Does it have that Stevia ‘fake sugar taste’…?

Ok, thanks for the feedback! I’m very sensitive to taste and smell I suppose…I’m one of those weirdos that can taste the difference between regular and diet sodas (not that I drink any anymore) and I can smell the difference as well. Weird. I may have to try this one!
