As athletes we all suffer from aches and pains after a hard workout. Unfortunately, there are many times that we suffer more than just an ache or pain, but an injury. This is due in-part to the stress we put on our bodies on a daily.weekly basis. I’ve found that when I over use my body without the proper recovery, I get injured. To avoid injury recovery becomes very important, if not, the most important thing you can do while training. As a marathoner I’m always looking for products that can help me in my recovery, whether it be a sports drink like Honeymaxx, or transdermal amino-patch you get with Enduropacks. These product are awesome; however, I wanted to find a product that I could put directly on the a muscle that was extra sore and needed some special attention. That’s why I was super excited when I found Primal Sports Mud through a friend on twitter.
Who is Primal Sports Mud?
From Primal Sports Mud’s website
Primal Sports Mud is a small company our of Louisville, KY. Their mission is to, “develop innovative products that reintroduce the natural methods of the ancients in the convenience of the home or training facility. By providing natural alternatives to aid and speed the body’s natural ability to recover, they can support elite athletes and active people in their pursuit of a healthy and competitive lifestyle. For the elite athlete, they want to help you perform at your peak by helping you recover more quickly. For the active enthusiast, they help you stay active and enjoy your sport or activity“.
Their claim is that, “When heat is applied to Primal Sport Mud, its jet black color and molecular structure absorb and convert the heat into beneficial infrared energy – which stimulates micro circulation. Improved circulation removes toxins and speeds up recovery so you can spend less time being sore and more time doing what moves you!
The Mud!
Therapeutic muds have been around for ages for therapeutic massage, mud bath, mud mask, or body mask. There are times however that these muds contain active ingredients that could be harmful. Primal Sports Mud is a new technology where they take the extract of ancient plant matter and remove all the potential harmful compounds found in other muds.
When apply their mud to the skin I found that I only needed a small amount about the size of a dime. The mud spread really good and evenly on my skin. The difficult part for me was apply the plastic wrap, as a plastic wrap doesn’t really go on your back. Once I applied the mud I used a heat wrap for about 20 mins, I found that the mud would get moist but not runny. I also observed the color of the mud turn from a black color to a brownish color after applying the heat. The mud did have some discoloring and it could be hard to wash off, but it was barley noticeable.
The most profound thing I found was that I started suffering muscle switching in my calf muscles, which most times is a sign of low magnesium or low niacin. However, I taking both kinds of supplements, so I was sure it wasn’t that. The twitching when on for weeks, I decided to try Primal Sports Mud on the affected area as a test. I’m glad I did! Within three applications the twitching was gone! And just to make it a good test I stopped taking the supplements a week before the first application. I also found that the mud worked on areas such as my foot where I was seeing some swelling after my long runs. Again, after three applications the soreness/swelling went away and my foot felt great.

I use a foam roller and a massage!!
So do I, please see my rublerollar review coming soon.
I usually foam roll and use compression socks.
Primal Sport Mud won’t replace your foam roller. But if you have pulled/sore muscles or tendinitis, Primal Sport Mud will help you recovery more quickly.
I start with an ice bath and the apply icy heat to the area
