If you are anything like me you’re always looking for that extra edge, that pick me up before a race. However, if you’re also like me you don’t want to put products in your body that are artificial and taste nasty. I’ve found that there are a lot of products on the market that are just, artificial, and taste nasty! That’s why I was excited to find Mud Energy. They are an all-natural alternative that I found gives me the kick I need before my races/workouts.

I should mention that I’m a HoneyMaxx ambassador; however, this doesn’t limit me in reviewing other product lines, and like all my other reviews I give my honest feedback.

Who is Mud Energy?

Mud Energy was started in 2009 with one main mission “to create a great tasting and fortified energy gel with quality ingredients that would fuel peak performance, health and recovery.” Their main product lines consist of a caffeinated and un-caffeinated chocolate gels. The gels are made up of high quality all-natural ingredients that are formulated in such a way to sustain one’s energy no matter what the exercise.

The Mud!

I was given both the caffeinated and un-caffeinated (not shown) for testing and reviewing purposes. When the product arrived I thought to myself, “WOW! finally a company solved the issue with, where do I put all these gels when I run”. Fortunately, I only use gels for my pre-run and I use HoneyMaxx for my races, and endurance runs. I love that fact that the package came with an eyehole that would allow me to hold the gel on a eyeclip either on my OrangeMud backpack or my Nathan running belt. To see how secure the package was I took a few of them on a 10 mile run while clipped on my running pack. They held up just fine and I didn’t lose any of them. I also like the fact that when you rip off the sealed part due to how they designed the package the seal stays on the package so there is no waste thrown down to the ground for those of us that “like to save the planet”.

The Taste?

For me the taste was overbearing in the Mud Energy Gel Chocolate Truffle Rage [High Intensity], I could really taste the coffee and for me it had a strong chocolate syrupy taste which I didn’t like. The Mud Energy Gel Chocolate Truffle Rage [Dive-N-Sea] had a less chocolate syrupy taste, and I liked the hint of salt in this one that I couldn’t taste in the Mud Energy Gel Chocolate Truffle Rage [High Intensity].

Performance?

Even though I did like the taste of the Mud Energy Gel Chocolate Truffle Rage [High Intensity] I must say that it did give me the extra kick I needed to start my race/workout, I found that the boost of caffeine did not give me the “jitters” that I would get with other like brands, And one package sustained me for a good 60 min before I felt I needed another dose of “pick-me-up”. The Mud Energy Gel Chocolate Truffle Rage [Dive-N-Sea] had the same effect though the difference I found is that I need another “pick-me-up” with-in 45mins, this probably had to do with the caffeine in the Mud Energy Gel Chocolate Truffle Rage [High Intensity].

Overall

If you are an endurance athlete that likes coffee/mocha taste, and doesn’t mind the price of these gels I would highly recommend them. If you are price conscientiousness and a casual runner these gels may not be the best option for you.
