As a runner and avid weightlifter I’m constantly looking to fuel my body, and fuel my body with “real food” not with foods I can’t say or spell. Yes, I fell victim to the processed foods that are full of sugar and high-fructose corn syrup. Why? Cause I liked the boost they would give me a “sugar-high” some would call it, but I found that these foods couldn’t sustain me, and once I would come down from the “sugar-high” it would be a crash landing. So i decided a few years ago to fuel my body with only whole types foods, food like Chia-seeds, fruits, and nuts. However, carrying these types of foods around can become a chore and messy, especially on a 3hr run. I always thought to myself, why doesn’t someone come up with a bar where I can get all these types of foods in one bite…well then I discovered PROBAR, a bar made out of “real-foods”.
Who is PROBAR?
The PROBAR is a company out of Salt Lake City, UT who make a variety of bars ranging from energy bars to meal replacements. All of their bars are organic and “NON-GMO”, they are in-fact involved in the www.nongmoproject.org where “verification is to give consumers transparency and access to clearly labeled Non-GMO Project Verified food and products. The Project seal tells the consumer that the product has gone through a rigorous third-party review process ensuring the product has been produced with consensus-based best practices for GMO avoidance.”
The Bar
I was given three flavors of PROBAR noted above to test and review. I was expecting the bars to be dry as I’ve had quite a few energy bars before and most of them were dry and crumbly. However, PROBAR were soft and moist they weren’t dry whatsoever. One of the first things I noticed and was very impressed with was the actual real-food they use in their bars. Things like, Blueberries, Chia-seeds, and Cashews I could plainly see them in the bars. I also found that the taste was outstanding. In each key ingredient like the blueberry PROBAR I was able to taste just that. blueberries. The other ingredients didn’t overpower the bar’s main ingredient, in-fact in each of the bars I tasted the mix complimented each other quite well.
Performance
OK, we know the PROBAR tastes good, but what about the performance/endurance? I found that the bar did sustain me quite well and was a good alternative to gel type products I usually take. I used the PROBARS mostly as a pre-workout bar especially on my long runs. I found that the bar gave me the energy I needed to run for about 90mins before I felt I needed another bar or gel type product. This is awesome for me because I usually take a gel type product every 45mins during my longer runs. I love how the bars didn’t upset my stomach either before or during my workouts, which as I have called out in my other posts could be an issue.
Conclusion
Likes

- Organic
- Vegan
- Dairy Free
- Real-food
- Easy to chew
- Performance
Dislikes
- Packaging – I like to see a better package which would allow me to clip the bar through an eye-lid so that I could carry it outside of a pouch
- Size – I feel that for the cost of the bar you’re not getting a whole lot.
- Gummy
Overall
If you are looking for an alternative to the classic gel type product, and don’t want your performance to take a hit, i would highly recommend PROBAR. It’s a great tasting alternative that will give you above and beyond performance.

I use Braaap Nutritional Bars & Ryno Power Supplements. I also use Gu Chomps for shorter runs & Huma gels for longer runs. I always care water with Nuun on my runs.
Right now I use nuun and eat a homemade chunk of dates, seeds, nut butter and a dehydrated fruit.
I use Gu gels or something like that.
I use Energy Bits or Huma Gels… after runs I chew on honey stinger chews
I use margarita shot bloks every 45 mins in my long runs too!
I’m just starting longer runs, so I’m experimenting with different types of fueling. I like a clif bar a little bit before I run, but I’m going to be trying out gu, clif shot blocks, and some other things I picked up at the store!
currently I use ENERGYbits and Nuun Hydration for my workouts. Would love to try these!!!
I’m a big fan of bars for fueling!
I love the Clif ShotBloks or Shots, but to be honest, I haven’t tried too many other things! I tend to stick with what I know!
I always eat before a run, ride, or swim and I like to have either a bar after, or a real meal if I can make it home! The Probar looks really cool, I’d love to try it out
Would love to try!
