You’ve been there, tired and fatigued after a long run/workout, haven’t you? I know I have! What I’ve found during my running career is that there are a lot of athletes that focus on pre/during workout nutrition but neglect the most important elements of training, that is, your post workout nutrition. Especially within the first 20 to 30 minutes of you finishing the workout. I struggled to learn this myself, never giving myself the right nutrition or the right amount of time for recovery. I found always myself sluggish or really achy after my workouts and didn’t know why, I took me finding a Newton running coach to teach me not only good running form, but proper nutrition pre-during-post workouts. Being an engineer he would give me the science behind the 2-to-1 carbs to protein ratio, as I found it interesting, I really never paid much attention. However, one day after a 3hr training session I knew that my body needed something to help it recover from such a beating, when I went to the store I found that there were a host of products on the market, but really didn’t have that 2-to 1 I was looking for, so I went on the search. While on my search I found Abloc Nutrition from a twitter friend of mine, so I reached out to the company and see if they would send me some product to test and check, and I sure glad they did!

Who is Abloc?

I find that people from the service are keenly aware of not only their surroundings but also their bodies. While in the service you are asked to push your body to limits not only physically challenging , but mentally as well. So, it didn’t strike me as a surprise when I did some research on Abloc and found that both of the co-founders were Marine Helicopter pilots and endurance athletes. Ok, I admit, I was a little surprised, not that a Marine would have been smart enough to start a company, or that they were endurance athletes but that they found the time to put their passions into creating such a great product,

What is Abloc?

Abloc is an endurance sports drink made for recovery. It is a perfect 2-to-1 ratio that delivers a “low sugar content, and they have included almost all complex carbohydrates. These complex carbs deliver a steady stream of glucose to quickly and efficiently replenish your glycogen stores”. There protein is made up of “Whey protein concentrate it is a powdered protein that is derived from milk. It is filtered and refined, removing things like fatty acids and lactose. Your body is able to quickly and efficiently break down the protein into amino acids, and deliver these to muscles in need of repair. This does the double duty of reducing next-day soreness and building lean muscle”.

The Drink!

What first noticed when opening the Abloc container was the chocolate smell, it reminded me of the smell from Quick chocolate milk. Which I happen to love as a kid. I also noticed that bottle was quite large, once the mix settled half the bottle was empty, and the scoop was fairly large, I’ve seen larger in some of the products, but still this scoop was big. It states that the best mix would be in either 8 or 10 ounces of water, I found that I like the chocolate taste and the more water the more water down it tasted so 8 ounces worked perfectly for me.

I found that the mix did dissolve quickly in cold water, and as I mentioned above the mix tasted best for me in about 8 ounces of water, I had to stir the mix for about 2 mins to get it to dissolve fully. Even after 2 mins there was some still some small clumps, but nothing that wasn’t tolerable.

OK, what about recovery?

I found that Abloc worked very well for my recovery, I was able to do back-to-back workouts and felt that my muscles weren’t that fatigued as they normally would be. In addition, the mix was easy on my stomach and was easily digested.

Conclusion

Likes
  • Taste
  • Low sugar
  • Performance
Dislikes
  • Packaging – I found that the 2lbs bottle was half full and it is such a waste of plastic
  • Lack of organic or “real food” – I’d like to see them use more organic items such as substituting Sucrose with Stevia or use Whey protein isolate and not concentrate
Overall

If you are looking for a recovery drink that has a perfect blend of carbs to protein ratio, than I would highly recommend Abloc. However, I believe if Abloc would look refine their perfect mix into a more “real-food” solution they would attract a lot more athletes that prefer “real-food” rather than substitutes.
