Fitness Trackers
As a blogger I’m fortune enough to get to blog about many different products, and one of those products always on the top or my review list are fitness trackers and heart-rate monitors. As I’m writing this post I can see about ten different heart rate monitors on my shelf, so when Wahoo Fitness reached out to me to see if I was open to reviewing the Wahoo Tickr X I have to admit, I wasn’t that excited. Last year I reviewed the Tickr Run and in that review I talked about all the great data Wahoo Fitness provides and what an outstanding product the Tickr Run was. Since I knew that the Tickr Run was an outstanding product I knew the Ticker X would be the same – but to be honest I really didn’t see the difference – that was until I started testing it out. Sure the shape, size, weight are all the same, but the features are not! What I found out was the Ticker X is not only a fitness tracker, oh no, it’s more – much more!
Who is Wahoo Fitness?
Based out of Atlanta, GA Wahoo Fitness is a company dedicated to bridging the gap between expensive, accurate exercise sensors and the everyday athlete. They achieve this by displaying workout information on that expensive computer you already carry with you… your smart phone. Their focus is to build fitness hardware that works with our mobile devices and not building dedicated products like watches, activity trackers, etc…This way they allow us, the consumer, to pick the form factor in which we want to use during our exercises.
The Tickr X Fitness Tracker
As mentioned I found that the Tickr X is much like the Tickr Run as far a shape, size, and weight go. However, in functionality they differ very much. One of the major features is that with the Tickr X you don’t have to have your mobile device with you. Your activities are saved on the device (in memory) and sync automatically to the Wahoo Fitness app (iOS & Android) when your mobile device is in [Bluetooth] range. Another major feature is the Tickr X now works with Wahoo Fitness’s 7 minute workout app (iOS & Android). I was one of the beta testers for this product and I was quite impressed in how the device counted the amount of reps I did per each 7 minute workout. The device also captured my form and notified per the app when my form was off. In the world of fitness wearables and apps I see this as a “homerun” as I’ve yet to see another wearable count your reps or inform you of your form. The potential is huge, and I think if they can take what they have done with the 7 minute workout app to the next level, such as inform me on my running form (stride, cadence, oscillation) real-time, or let me know I’m lifting that weight incorrectly, they would have a “grand-slam” when is comes to wearables.
The Wahoo Fitness Tracker Apps
Even though I think that Wahoo Fitness hit a “homerun” with the Wahoo TICKR X Workout Tracker with Memory for iPhone & Android and how it interacts with the 7 minute workout I still feel they have a lot of work to do with their flagship app. I love that fact that I don’t have to have my mobile phone with me and the data is captured the device memory. However, the data that is captured is minimal as it only captures the hear-rate, calories, and distance over the length of time. I would like to see all the data that captured that would be normally captured when I have my device and the app on. I found this to limiting, and forced me to take my phone when I didn’t want to. I was a bit perplexed that the Tickr X didn’t save this data and didn’t understand why. It left me a be frustrated and confused. In spite of this, I really believe Wahoo Fitness wants to take their devices and apps to another level. I was asked to be interviewed and to give my thoughts about the next-gen app/device. I think there is a bright future for Wahoo Fitness I look forward to seeing their next devices and apps!
